Introduction:
Earthquake is a lighthearted and humorous story to read, written by Ruskin Bond. As the title suggests, it’s about how the Burman family survives an earthquake. Usually, when you think about earthquakes it sounds terrifying and powerful, but Ruskin Bond writes it in a gentle and funny way.
What Happens:
The Burman family
live on a quiet hill in Shillong. Even though earthquakes are common there, they
still live in their large, old house. They had a cook named Mumtaz. Grandfather
and Grandmother raised three grandchildren. Rakesh (eleven years), Mukesh (six
years), and Dolly (three years). One morning, there were signs of an
earthquake. In no time, the ground shook and things started falling.
The Lesson of
the Story:
Earthquake is a story
of resilience and fortitude. Even after such disaster, the characters didn’t
complain. They didn’t feel ungrateful. They simply accepted what happened. If
you read the story, you might feel inspired to do so too.
The
Illustrations:
The illustrations
by Sayan Muhkerjee are stunning! Even on pages without illustrations, there are
still watercolors or earthquake cracks.
More:
My favorite part in
this story was when the Burman family were eating sardines and Mumtaz’s wife’s chapattis
after the shock. Also, some readers might think that Earthquake has very little
action, and focuses mostly on the characters than the actual events. If you
want more info, read the book! It’s amazing how Ruskin Bond can turn an
earthquake into a beautiful story.
